Introduction to the UV-5R

BaoFeng introduced the UV-5R Dual Band, Dual Display radio in 2012, marking the beginning of its extraordinary journey. Since its inception, the UV-5R has achieved remarkable success and undergone two significant changes, with the second generation signified by the BFB297 Firmware (2nd Gen.) in early 2013 and the N5R firmware tweak in August 2014.

Cosmetic Variations

The UV-5R comes in several cosmetic variants, which primarily differ in their visual design, along with the potential removal of the ‘Band Key’ (no longer required in Gen. 2). Variations include UV-5R v2+, UV-5RA, UV-5RE, UV-5R+ (Plus), and a few other less common variants. Please note that some of these variations may not be compatible with specific accessories like the original UV-5R batteries.

Inverted Display Generation

In late 2013, the UV-5R introduced a new variant generation with an inverted (privacy) display series, leading to the creation of the BF-F8+ and its own cosmetic variants, such as the GT-3 and 997-S. In the fall of 2014, the UV-5R welcomed its successor, the 3rd Generation BF-F8HP.

Versatile Radio for Amateur Use

The BaoFeng UV-5R is authorized for use on amateur frequencies, offering the ability to transmit on Narrowband (12.5kHz) and Wideband (25kHz).

Dual Watch Receiver

While the BaoFeng UV-5R features a single built-in receiver, it can ‘watch’ two channels in semi-duplex mode. This means you can monitor two different frequencies, even on different bands (VHF/UHF), with the radio giving priority to the first station receiving an incoming call.

FM Broadcast Station

You can listen to FM Broadcast radio while simultaneously monitoring your radio frequencies in the background, ensuring that incoming calls take precedence and you never miss an important call while enjoying the radio.

Group Tones Supported

The BaoFeng UV-5R supports the most common Analog Tones, including CTCSS, DCS, and DTMF calling methods. You can configure your calling methods using group tones. Most repeater applications require tone calling (private line), and the UV-5R adheres to the latest standards. It can even send DTMF tones, facilitating the transmission of ANI (Caller ID) or remote commands requiring DTMF tones.

You can program your BaoFeng UV-5R to suit your preferences. The radio provides 128 programmable memory channels that you can easily add or remove from the scanning list using the included computer software. Alphanumeric names can be assigned to channels through computer programming. The radio offers two power levels (up to 5 watts maximum), allowing you to control your communication range. VFO limits can be set using the CHIRP software. Programming from a PC enables you to configure the radio to operate exactly as needed.
